VSME ESG Maturity

The VSME (Voluntary SME Sustainability Reporting Standard) from EFRAG offers small and mid-sized companies a simplified framework for sustainability reporting — voluntary, but increasingly expected by banks and large customers.

EFRAG (EU) VSME Standard

What is the VSME standard?

The VSME (Voluntary SME Sustainability Reporting Standard) was developed by EFRAG (European Financial Reporting Advisory Group). It is the "little sibling" of the ESRS (European Sustainability Reporting Standards) and is aimed specifically at SMEs that do not fall directly under CSRD.

The 3 ESG dimensions

  • Environment — climate protection, energy consumption, resource use, biodiversity
  • Social — working conditions, diversity, human rights in the supply chain
  • Governance — ethics, anti-corruption, compliance, transparency

Why VSME for SMEs?

  • Banks increasingly demand ESG data for lending decisions
  • Large customers in the supply chain (CSRD-obligated) request ESG data
  • A simplified standard — pragmatic instead of bureaucratic
  • Voluntary, but strategically sensible as preparation
